Panteg Cricket Club was founded in 1876 by Sampson Copestake. After purchasing the Old Panteg Foundry, he established his own Cricket team called Panteg Steel Works X1. Captain Aubrey Butler took charge of the team in 1899 at the age of 21. Baldwins Ltd took charge of the works in 1902 and the club crest of the Phoenix was taken from the Phoenix Galvanising Company a subsidiary of Alfred Baldwin Ltd. The Club Headquarters is a Panteg House, Greenhill Road, Griffithstown, which started off as the house of the works manager.
